Ask Ella: What’s Wrong With My Succulent?!

Succulents are way harder to care for than most people think.

Ask Ella is a recurring Garden Collage feature where we ask our in-house florist, Ella Stavonsky, about floral design– including the history of, origin, and maintenance that goes into some of the most intriguing flowers on the market today. This column is dedicated exclusively to common and rare varieties of flowers you’re likely to find at your local market. This week, we dive into everything that can go wrong with your succulent– and how to fix it.

For being a “plant that it’s impossible to kill”, succulents can be pretty sensitive. We’ve seen ours get infested with weird white bug residue, dry up, turn brown, shrivel, and generally keel over.

Fortunately Ella always seems to have the answers. (That’s why we’re always asking her stuff!) Below, we’ve gathered up her advice and best practices.

Now that you’ve got your succulent back in good health, try using them in a bouquet!
