Bouquet of the Week: The Merits of Upside-Down Flowers

Emergent research shows that the most effective way to keep flowers fresh is to style an “upside down” bouquet, with each flower’s bulbs submerged under water and the stems up in the air. The evidence is anecdotal, but “upside down bouquets” serve the dual purpose of aerating the stems while nourishing the petals with water direct on contact, rather than relying on internal extraction through the stems.
