In Honor of Earth Day, We’re Planting A “Mini Forest”

Each year on April 22nd, Earth Day encourages citizens worldwide to take action and support environmental initiatives. One of the central tenets of Earth Day has been a focus on deforestation, its effects, and how it can be combatted. As a result, observances of the day typically include planting a tree (their current goal is to see 7.8 billion trees planted in the coming years). But if you’re in a big city, finding the space to plant a tree isn’t always feasible.

In honor of our capacity to celebrate Earth Day even in small urban spaces, we decided to plant our own “mini forest,” one that wouldn’t require too much sun and could comfortably live on a windowsill. We selected a money tree for our centerpiece, as they are relatively low maintenance and easy for Lil’ Sprouts to take care of (they need only partial sun, they don’t require a lot of depth when planted, and they should be watered just once a week). We surrounded our tree with herbaceous flowers and plush ground cover– both of which also require only partial sun– to enhance the forest-like effect. We then interspersed the plants with bits of moss to imitate the soft cushion of a forest floor. All that was missing were some vernal pools!
