This One Tree Grows Forty Different Kinds of Fruit

  • The Tree of 40 Fruit is an ongoing series of hybridized fruit trees by contemporary artist, Sam Van Aken.
  • At a recent TEDx event in Manhattan, Van Aken explained how grafting branches from heirloom, native, hybrid, and antique varieties of stone fruit trees allowed him to produce a single tree that grows over 40 different kinds of fruit– including cherries, nectarines, apricots, plums, and more.

Sam Van Aken’s Tree of Forty Fruit started out as a preservation experiment that soon became an agricultural art project. Above, watch Van Aken explain the incredible bloom cycle of the tree he “designed” in order to preserve heirloom varieties of stone fruit in upstate New York. Below, check out this picture of the multiple plum varieties he harvested from the tree during a single week in August 2014.
