Lessons From Arne Maynard, in Los Angeles and San Francisco

Arne Maynard is an internationally-renowned garden designer whose new book, The Gardens of Arne Maynard (Merrell, London, 2015) was published in the UK, USA and Canada this month. The book, which focuses on twelve of Maynard’s gardens, offers fascinating insights into the evolution of his designs.

On Monday, September 28, Garden Collage collaborated with the Garden Conservancy to support two talks with renowned Garden Designer Arne Maynard: One at the Ebell of Los Angeles on September 28, and another at The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, which took place on October 1.

In L.A., Maynard spoke about how collaboration with gardeners, plant specialists, and traditional craftspeople– combined with an unwavering passion for plants– enabled him to create “gardens that appear to have grown out of their environment, naturally suiting both their owners and locations”. The Ebell of Los Angeles provided a stunning backdrop, with candle-lit, white linen tables adorning the garden area, where guests received custom GC matches, plantable seed cards, seed packets, and Garden Collage eco totes, which the Garden Conservancy also distributed to guests at a VIP luncheon the next morning.

The Walt Disney Museum in San Francisco was the next stop for Maynard’s presentation and Q&A, and Arne took the opportunity to answer personal gardening and landscape design questions from a wonderfully engaged audience. The event was filled with beautiful bouquets, including a personal GC bouquet that we had made specifically for Arne, which was designed by the amazing local florist Farmgirl Flowers, a longtime GC favorite. We loved meeting so many of our GC readers at the Disney Museum, which was appropriately filled with garden enthusiasts. (We think this is pretty poetic, given that Disneyland employs a crew of 600 gardeners who work 365 days a year to keep the park’s gardens looking tip-top.)

For those who couldn’t make either event, check out our slideshow of images from the Los Angeles and San Francisco talks below, and revisit our Interview with Arne Maynard.

We hope to see you at a future event!
