GC Founder Daisy Helman Spotlights The Gardens of Luciano Giubbilei

Recently I had the great and unique pleasure of hearing a talk by famed garden designer Luciano Giubbilei. As part of a beautiful discussion series sponsored by The Garden Conservancy, Giubbilei’s talk revolved around his latest book– The Gardens of Luciano Giubbilei— in which Giubbilei discusses his own mesmerizing evolution as a gardener. From his introduction by way of growing and eating vegetables in his grandmother’s kitchen to the everlasting effect that light played in creating shadows on the streets of his hometown of Siena, Luciano’s influences wed the personal to the natural.

GCHe discussed why and how using art in the garden can be achieved, and revealed the basis of his understanding in terms of mixed flowers and how they function in a garden. It turns out that he never even considered the role that art plays in garden design until he participated in the Chelsea Flower Show, where he has won an incredible number of gold stars. He looks at the garden intellectually, and is extremely concerned with being connected to the landscape, and with understanding a sense of place through the lens of the garden.

I highly recommend to those that don’t know who Luciano Giubbilei is that you order his current book and get to know him! He’ll change your perspective on the foundation of the garden, while inspiring you to seek out your own light-streaked streets and vegetable-filled kitchens. His next book comes out in April 2016– just in time for Spring.
