Scarring is one of the most tricky skin ailments for those seeking natural skincare solutions. Honey

Honey is something of a miracle ingredient these days. From easing allergies to quelling period pains, honey can also be used as a facial treatment by applying it all over the face and letting it stand anywhere from 15 minutes to overnight before washing it off; turmeric added to Manuka honey is an especially potent combination for healing scars, which also serves double duty as honey’s antibacterial properties help prevent acne. Lemon

Lemon juice is known for its bleaching qualities, and this can apply to the appearance of scars as well, with the added benefits of also stimulating new tissue formation and skin elasticity; just be sure not to apply it directly before spending time in the sun, as dermatological research suggests that the topic use of lemon can make skin more vulnerable to UV damage. Also, be sure to moisturize after, as lemon’s high acidity can dry out sensitive and normal skin.

Aloe Vera

In addition to being easily absorbed, aloe vera supports skin regeneration and healing, and has anti-inflammatory effects, which can help prevent scars before they even start to form. Harvested directly from aloe plants (yes, you can just take a chunk of aloe and rub it on your skin to get the benefits), this cooling, soothing moisturizer is light and fresh-smelling, and can be used multiple times a day to minimize discoloration.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is high in Vitamin E, which helps promote healing in the skin on both the inside and out. While ingesting unheated olive oil has numerous health benefits, doing so also helps to keep the skin moisturized from the inside out. Topically, olive oil can be applied directly to a scar to help fade hyper-pigmentation (just make sure to massage it in for about a minute and leave the oil on for at least 20 minutes, once a day for three weeks).

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is a member of the parsley family, and according to Livestrong, it contains active compounds called triterpenoids, which “appear to strengthen the skin, and increase blood supply and antioxidant activity around a wound or surgical incision”. Look for natural scar creams containing at least 1% active gotu kola for maximum benefit. Want a cheaper alternative? Try soaking a [easyazon_link identifier=”B00DLJU7FK” locale=”US” tag=”gardcoll03-20″]gotu kola tea bag[/easyazon_link] in cold water and applying the drained sachet to the scarred area for 15-20 minutes. Repeat daily.
