What’s in Your Water? Maybe It’s Time You Asked.

Recent studies have shown that pesticides in water are more common than people often think, and this, combined with consumers' mounting awareness about water quality, makes water testing more appealing than ever.

In the last few years, between Climate Change and recent political discourse, water has become a seminal issue in America. Access to water, how clean it is, and even its absence and excess in parts of the country continue to dominate news headlines, as well they should: our bodies are 70% water, and there is perhaps no greater or more necessary natural resource required for human life.

Recent studies have also shown that pesticides in water are more common than people often think, and this, combined with consumers’ mounting awareness about water quality, makes water testing more appealing than ever.

“Whether your water is cloudy or is crystal clear, you won’t know what you’re really drinking unless you test it”– this was the reminder from Test Assured that got us thinking about how anxious we were to test the water at our New York City studio once and for all.

Test Assured’s Complete Water Test Kit is one of the most complete water testing kits available on the market– it includes tests for lead, bacteria, pesticides, iron, copper, nitrates and nitrites, chlorine levels, alkalinity, hardness, and pH levels check. The test makers pride themselves on both accuracy and affordability (the complete test is the made in the USA and retails for only $29.95).

In this climate of water scarcity, its important to remember that water is life— and for that statement to ring true, it has to be clean.

The test is easy to use and can be done without the assistance of a trained professional– its easy to administer, as the process takes about 15 minutes, with the exception of the bacteria test, which takes 48 hours to yield complete results.

We like that testing your own water in your own home also gives agency– even if you live in a city with famously good water (like New York), the individual pipes in your home could be leaching undesirable toxins into your drinking supply. The only way to be sure is to test what’s coming directly out of your faucet.

Checking the different levels in your water can also be insightful to dermatological woes: many people lament “hard” water and the effect it has on their hair and skin, and a spot check on your individual water supply yields insight into how you might change it (by purchasing a water filter, for example).

Most of us don’t think much about the water we drink on a daily basis, but a routine test can be the difference between developing health issues and taking preventative measures. In this climate of water scarcity, its important to remember as it has been said and said again that water is life— and for that statement to ring true, it has to be clean.
