Paris– once known as the land of cheese, ham, and butter– has come along way since foie gras and croque-madames. Herewith, we compile a list of our favorite vegan cafes and other hotspots in the city.
Smmmile, a “vegan pop festival”, launches its second edition in Paris this September; in the autumn, too, thanks in part to a crowdfunding campaign that raised more than 20,000€, vegan concept store Aujourd’hui Demain will open its doors to a ready public.
Far from being a tofu-fueled niche interest, new-era veganism is winning fans – yep, even in a country where steak-frites may be considered the national dish – with its positivity, exuberance and unbeatable take on the meeting point of ethics and ecological thinking. Whether you’re full-on vegan or simply ve-curious, you’ll want to check out Paris’s best vegan hotspots.
A forerunner of conscious eating, Sol Semilla puts the spotlight on superfood supplements that give the canteen’s colorful platters-of-the-day extra oomph. Exotic ingredients lend the vegan dishes plenty of interest– try blue corn pancakes one day, spirulina risotto the next.
Raw food restaurant 42 Degrés brings a sophisticated gloss to vegan eating. At workaday lunches, Sunday brunches and gourmet dinners paired with biodynamic wines, gastronomically-inventive dishes might include cumin chapattis, cashew spaghetti, and beetroot ravioli. Say frawmage!
Part coffee shop, part nouveau-bistro, super-stylish Abattoir Végétal is just the place for a cool soup of cucumber, avocado and coconut milk, or a hearty vegan burger with a side of sweet potato fries. Sun’s out? Score a seat on the terrace– the best place to sip a cold-pressed juice.
A one-woman advertisement for the vitality of vegan eating, Loly Martin runs her weekend stand, Lolypop Kitchen, at markets in the east and the south of the city. Among her homely recipes: spiced buckwheat and fermented tofu bowls and broad bean, sesame, and seaweed rice rolls. Ask about her Belleville supper clubs, too.
A very classy affair, the 100% vegan afternoon tea at Paris’s Shangri-La hotel is the sweet, sweet pinnacle of vegan teatime. From a delicate calisson to an exquisite Mont-Blanc, the classics of French patisserie are reworked here with nut and soy milks, kamut and buckwheat, coconut oil and Latin American panela.
Located at 96 Rue Quincampoix, Vegan Mania is home of the best ethical beauty brands from all over France and beyond. From konjac sponges and charcoal scrubs to natural hair dyes and organic sunscreens, each product is certified to be cruelty-free and to contain no animal by-products.
Close to the Canal St Martin, Rome-trained designer Carmen Ragosta has run her cozy boutique and café for more than ten years. Buy her one-of-a-kind garments– all made of non-animal-derived fabrics and materials– then perch at a compact table for a fuss-free, Italian-inspired meal. Polish it all off with a vegan tiramisu.
Scandi-chic bistro H.O.P.E. (Home of the Plant Eaters) serves flavorful vegan options against a minimalist modern backdrop. Dig in to the Bowl of Hope– a pile of rice, red beans, mango slices, and coconutty sweet potato chunks– or drop in at teatime for a handful of black sesame biscuits.
An inviting space ripe for a rummage, 1944 is a mix of indie boutique, coffee shop, and art gallery. Fashion accessories might include bags handcrafted from pineapple-leaf fibers and belts made from bicycle inner tubes. Stave off peckishness with a selection of vegan nibbles and desserts.
Organic and all-natural, beauty brand Lamazuna fills its cheerful small storefront with vegan products such as non-animal-tested shampoo bars and deodorants. Frangipani-scented cocoa butter-baobab oil bars make an intoxicating alternative to regular drugstore moisturizer; solid toothpaste comes in cinnamon, mint, or sage and lemon.
