Christo Vladimirov Javacheff is known for creating beautiful environmental works of art. His latest project, The Floating Piers, is a series of walkways installed at Lake Iseo near Brescia, Italy.
The Floating Piers is an immersive, site-specific environmental art installation that creates a walkable surface between Sulzano and Monte Isola as well as to the island of San Paolo.
The project opened on June 18, 2016, and consisted of a saffron-colored walkway made of 100,000 square meters of yellow fabric atop a modular floating dock system of 220,000 high-density polyethylene cubes.
Between its grand opening and the last day of the installation (July 3), local officials estimated that The Floating Piers attracted 1.2 million visitors, or approximately 72,000 people per day in the course of its 16-day run.
The concept of “walking on water” presupposes a new kind of relationship between man and his environment: herewith, families defy logic by walking on water with the help of a man-made platform.
Christo’s modular deck system created a series of walkways that were ultimately temporary– in order to ease environmental impact, the exhibit only lasted for about two weeks.
Yellow, historically, has been a color associated with the sun. Because of their light color, Christo’s floating decks added geometric symmetry to an otherwise rugged and untamed terrain.
