Beautiful, Instagram-worthy floral icecubes are an easy way to add intrigue to any drink– just remember to boil the water first! Discover why and find other GC tips in the attached gallery.
Any colorful flowers can be frozen in water to make floral icecubes, but we recommend using edible varieties of flowers and blooming herbs like roses, pansies, nasturtiums, marigolds, violets, geraniums, calendula, lavender, and chives. Keep in mind that pungent herbs like chives may add a slight flavor to the drink, so try to plan your recipes accordingly.
Boiling water and cooling it before adding it to the icecube trays will minimize the opacity of the ice– aka, the frozen water will be more “clear” and you will be able to better see the flowers. This is an old trick that works wonders!
Ideally, you should fill the bottom third of the icecube tray with water and flowers, then freeze it. Once it has frozen through, add more boiled water to the top, and freeze. This will keep the flowers from floating to the top of each cube (they will appear more “submerged” in the ice this way).
Choose a variety of colors for maximum effect.
To add texture or a different pattern to your ice cubes, try mixing in some green herbs like rosemary, mint, or sage.
If you’d like the icecubes to flavor your beverage, try mixing some lemonade or maple syrup into the water before freezing it.
Try not to over-fill the icecube trays as this will create unusual shapes. Aim for squares, darling.
Once removed from the tray, add icecubes to your favorite drink and enjoy!
