The Rockaway Peninsula has long offered New York City’s best surf break, and as summer winds down there are more reasons than ever to head east. From seasonal pop up dinners on the roof of a Tuscan castle to spending the night floating under the stars, photographer Ruthie Abel captures some GC Rockaway faves.
Stop by for Saturday Cowboy Breakfast (9-11:30 am) for a seasonal, locally-sourced dinner (dates noted here). Organic vegetables, flowers, herbs, and more are available on Fridays (3pm-6pm) and Saturdays (9am-1pm), May through October.

Hop a ferry from Pier 11, Wall Street to Jacob Riis Landing, the site of one of the first U.S. naval air stations. Known as “The People’s Beach”, the park is named for the legendary journalist and photographer Jacob Riis, who documented NYC’s poor and working class. It boasts an ocean beach, boardwalks, a golf course, and restored 1932 Art Deco bathhouse. After working up an appetite at the volleyball net, grab a lobster roll at Wild Feast Foods or sample Samesa’s beet hummus.
Housed in David Selig’s (Rockaway Taco, Rice) newest Rockaway venture, The Castle is a no-reservations pop-up serving fresh local fish (caught that morning) and organic veggies from Edgemere Farm. Grab a rooftop seat on Saturdays and Sundays.
Rockaway Beach Surf Club is a hub of live performances, art exhibits, movie screenings, and among others, “Brunch is for Losers that Don’t Surf”. Board storage and fresh fish tacos available on site. Events are updated on the Surf Club’s Facebook page.
Choose from an abundance of produce, flowers, and good vibes from local youth who grow the goods at one of the largest youth-run community gardens at Beach 58th Street off of Beach Channel Drive.
Whitney Aycock is Rockaway’s answer to Manhattan’s famed “soup Nazi”. A Yelp reviewer swears, “If I were on death row, my last meal would involve Whitney’s Cavolini pie.” Stop by 97-14 Rockaway Beach Blvd or grab a slice at the Riis Park Bazaar stand.
