This weekend is Memorial Day– which usually coincides with the first signs of summer weather. Check out our picks for where to enjoy the outdoors and a cool drink in New York City this weekend.
With its rustic wood, winding vines, and dangling greenery, Gallow Green at the McKittrick Hotel has a whimsical, earthy vibe that’ll make think you’ve stepped into an alternate dimension. The bar sits above the venue for Sleep No More (the now iconic retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth).
Technically Grand Banks isn’t a bar at all– it’s a boat! The historic wooden schooner is docked at Pier 25 and serves a menu designed around sustainable, wild-caught fish and oysters. (It has an impressive array of nautical, locally-sourced cocktails to boot.) GC founder Daisy Helman was absolutely charmed by the Grand Banks– especially when they told her any canine friends were welcome on board.
The Park boasts several beautifully-decorated rooms (including an enclosed atrium and penthouse rooftop patio) but it’s the 4000 square-foot outdoor garden that GC Photo Editor Andreana Bitsis can’t resist. Japanese maples trees, fragrant wisteria, cheerful garden gnomes, and dangling bird-feeders all create an “urban park” feel.
JIMMY at the James Hotel is GC Stylist Chelsea Dowling’s go-to spot, celebrated for the bar’s notable summer slushies, view of the Freedom Tower, and “bad-ass chick DJs.” Their plunge pool is also open to public after 3 PM, so if you’re looking to cool off this weekend, don’t forget to bring your trunks!
With its many rooms of incredible art, the Met can be an overwhelming place. Take a break at their rooftop bar, which offers cocktails, light snacks, and an unparalleled view of Central Park. It’s one of GC Marketing Director Lena Braun’s favorite green sanctuaries in the city. It also currently houses Transitional Objet, a full-size interpretation of the house from Psycho and the all-American classic red barn.
Located in Riverside Park at 105th, Ellington in the Park is Staff Writer Nora Rose Mueller’s favorite spot to catch the sunset with a cool drink in hand. With a view of the Hudson River and Palisades beyond, the Ellington’s unassuming tables and bar façade keep the views and the scenery center stage.
