From tray systems to hydroponics to felt pockets and beyond, green walls are all the rage in urban environments. Herewith, we spotlight 9 beautiful green walls in New York City that are paving the way for the future of design.
The two story outdoor green wall at 1 Great Jones Alley is connected to a private landscaped garden on the second floor, as designed by architecture firm HMWhite. Located above a somewhat hidden drive in NoHo on the side of a 12-story luxury condo, the wall is also publicly viewable and a fixture of green in the neighborhood.
The newly-revamped Austin Nichols Building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn is an ecosystem of old and new residences, shops, cafes, art venues, and boutiques that cohere around the industrial-chic element of botany. Here, an interior green wall at the core of the main residence offers a green respite from the bustling environment of the nearby East River Waterfront Park, while offering a serene, visually-striking reference point for the nature many New Yorkers often crave.
The Boundary at 565 Broome Street in Soho is both timeless and futuristic in its key positioning of plants in close proximately to the pool– the result, at once luxurious and grand, reminisces of tropical environments and eternal spring.
In The Boundary’s main atrium, striking height and post-industrial sight lines create the illusion of infinite upward growth, as the atrium’s climbing greenery harkens to the towering canopy of a forest. This modern, tasteful installation inspires awe and welcomes curiosity– two important aspects of functional, creative design in 2017.
At 251 First Street, interior biophilia merges seamlessly with outdoor serenity at a private residence that is minimal and chic. The building’s lobby is lined with two pocket-style green walls that create a continuum green out into the landscaped courtyard, which is equipped with grass-filled raised beds that are at once wild and contained.
The exterior green wall at 152 Elizabeth Street is New York City’s largest green wall, affixed on the side of a luxury condo complex in Nolita.
The luxury residences of 70 Charlton in West SoHo are the newest addition to a storied (and famously high-end) neighborhood with no shortage of drool-worthy real estate. Here, two contextual towers designed by Beyer Blinder Belle are connected by a landscaped courtyard designed for discovery repose.
The interior at 19 Park Place in TriBeCa is as enchanting as it is subtle: the natural light and open glass foyer of this luxury residence adds contemporary flair to a historical building in one of New York’s most historic neighborhoods. With an emphasis on “light and air”, Ismael Leyva has created a modern architectural statement out of steel, glass, and concrete that includes a living green wall with a 19-foot waterfall and custom sculpture by Amanda Weil.
