Honigmond Garden Hotel is a beautiful, botany-rich hotel located in the historic center of Berlin. Herewith, photographer Caterina Rancho explores this luxe German hideaway.
Located just a short walk from Hauptbahnhof station in central Berlin, Honigmond Garden Hotel embodies the “elegance and esprit of the closing of the 19th century.” Erected in 1845, the hotel’s exterior patio garden offers a quiet respite from the bustle of the city, in an enclosed space where guests can enjoy coffee or tea or (on warm nights,) a glass of wine in the garden. The towering vertical green wall overlooking the space makes it hard to believe that the enclosure is located in one of Berlin’s most bustling neighborhoods.
Honigmond Garden Hotel has been called “a fairytale castle with a garden,” and that detail is reflected in the boutique’s ornate, subtle-but-purposeful embellishments, like this overgrown pot of fresh flowers on a windowsill in one of the hotel’s main foyers.
A mix of potted and earth-grown plants adorn various trellises, walls, and stairwells on the property.
July is the hottest month in Berlin, with an average temperature of only 64 degrees Fahrenheit (18°C). These moderate summer temperatures make Honigmond Garden Hotel’s plant life all the more impressive: the garden bursts forth from its partial-shade environment with the lushness of garden that receives twice as much sun!
“The historic charm of our building, which is over a hundred years old, will enchant you,” the hotel writes of their property. “Listen to the creaking wooden floor whispering stories of the past. Marvel at the ceiling frescoes and stucco, which turn your room into a piece of art. Or behold your relaxed self in the magnificent golden mirrors in the hallway.” The charm of the exterior garden, however, is just a bonus.
Terra cotta pots line a formally-laid brick walkway, which make for a dense, filled-out garden space.
Citrus and grapes grow on the property in tandem during the warmer months.
Wooden floors and antique images in the hotel common areas give Honigmond a relaxed-yet-regal vibe. For those looking for a bit of historicism with modern flair, the hotel’s shared gathering spaces do not disappoint.
Freed of its shelf, a vase of flowers sits chicly on the floor against wallpaper-lined walls. Germany might not be known for its joie de vivre, per se, but rogue design considerations like this one add a bit of unstructured intrigue to what could otherwise seem like an overly-formal design scheme.
