Honey-dipped apples are an easy-to-prepare party dish that’s appealing to adults and fun for kids to make. Using chia, shredded coconut, and slivered almonds is a nice way to add beneficial omegas to any party table– and they also taste delicious when combined with fresh, crunchy fruit. It’s easy and fun, and the the leftovers can be used to make a smoothie the next day.
Wash and slice 2-4 organic apples to 1/4 inch thickness, taking care to remove all seeds and fibrous parts. Two large apples will fill a serving plate comfortably. (This recipe can also be made with other fruit, like bananas and firm pears.)
Fill a small bowl with honey (preferably organic, raw, or otherwise ethically-sourced). If necessary, thin the honey by placing the jar in a bowl of hot water for 10-15 minutes.
To coat the apples, honey should be pourable– about the consistency of molasses.
Fill a few small bowls each with chia seeds, shredded coconut, slivered almonds, or any other small, granulated topping of your choice. For best results, stick to dry ingredients that will easily adhere to the honey (chunkier toppings won’t stick as well).
Dip half an apple slice in honey, then sprinkle topping of your choice over an empty bowl, which will catch what doesn’t stick.
Be sure to avoid dunking the honey-covered apple into your topping bowl as this will cause the chia, coconut, or whatever “sprinkles” you are using to clot.
Don’t be afraid if you drop an apple slice in the honey bowl! You’ll just have to eat that one…
Have a platter ready for the coated apple slices. For best results, refrigerate the apples before serving to help solidify the toppings.
The bowl used to collect the sprinkles can be saved to make a smoothie the next day. Simply add the leftover chia, coconut, and almond mixture into a blender with 1 frozen banana and 1 cup of almond milk. Add a dash of cinnamon, blend, and enjoy!
Add a squeeze of citrus to the final product– this will enhance the flavor and keep the apples from turning brown. Enjoy!
