Garden Collage contributor Caterina Rancho shares her recipe for DIY charcoal toothpaste. It’s chemical-free, non-abrasive, and utilizes one of this past year’s most celebrated super-cleaners: charcoal. Yes, the paste is black– but it’s great for your pearly whites!
Our DIY Charcoal Toothpaste is a chemical-free, non-abrasive way to utilize one of this year’s most celebrated super-cleaners: charcoal. Yes, the paste is black– but it’s great for your pearly whites!
For this toothpaste you’ll need the following ingredients: coconut oil, bentonite clay, charcoal, natron, course sea salt, clove and mint essential oil, and birch sugar. First, heat the coconut oil to a temperature at which it is soft and mixable.
Next, add equal parts bentonite clay and about 1 teaspoon of charcoal.
Add a scoop of natron and just a little pinch of course sea salt– the abrasiveness is good for your teeth!
Add two drops of clove and mint essential oils and stir.
Birch sugar, which is very nourishing to tooth enamel, can be added to take the salty “bite” out of the toothpaste– it adds a sweetness that also functions to clean teeth.
Mix ingredients until it becomes a paste and squeeze into clean toothpaste tubes using a plastic bag. If mixture is course due to chilly ambient temperatures (coconut oil will typically harden at room temperature) then simply scoop the toothpaste into a jar for later use.
Seal the tube and enjoy!
Homemade toothpaste will keep for at least 6 months– integrate it along with regular flossing and your gums and teeth will thank you!
