Swale caught our attention earlier this year when the floating food barge began traveling along NYC’s rivers. Now, the creators have teamed up with a different kind of innovator: Parisian artist Monsieur Plant.
Swale, the food barge that is now the only floating garden in NYC, was launched early this year in an effort to spark a conversation about urban land access. Currently, it is illegal for public parks in NYC to grow fresh fruits and vegetables, despite the South Bronx being the largest food desert in the United States. Operating within a technical loophole, Swale offers a model with improved quality and access to fresh produce, while simultaneously eliminating transportation waste. Parisian artist Monsieur Plant‘s new installation on the barge, The Walking Plant, is designed to highlight the contrasting urbanization and nature that can simultaneously be found in New York City.
The connotation of this project, “The Walking Plant”, is a nod to the the series, “The Walking Dead” in the sense that Monsieur Plant’s installation suggests “that nature has taken back its rights”.
