Wave Hill is a 28-acre public garden in the Bronx whose mission is to celebrate the artistry and legacy of its landscapes, which overlook the Hudson River and Palisades. Wave Hill’s mission is to explore human connections to the natural world through programs in horticulture, education, and the arts.
Gorgeous pergola overlooking the Hudson River and Palisades in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
The former home of financier George Perkins and his family, the 28-acre property features lavish rolling lawns and river vistas, sunset concerts, numerous artistically-designed gardens and woodlands to explore, plus two mansions with unique gallery spaces and immersive outdoor art installations.
Wave Hill House, a stately field stone mansion originally built in 1843, has been a vacation home to many prominent New Yorkers, including 12-year-old Teddy Roosevelt– whose family rented the house in the summer– and Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, who used to hold tea parties in a tree house on the lawn.
This dynamic hillside “wild garden” at the highest point at Wave Hill offers narrow paths to explore and spectacular river views. Select wild species from around the world combine to achieve a “planted-by-nature” effect. This garden was inspired by the informally planted English wild gardens as championed by William Robinson (1838-1935), an influential nineteenth-century author and garden designer.
Wave Hill’s gardens are abundant and renowned for their intimacy of scale and carefully-cultivated serendipity.
“Plantsmanship”, aesthetic sensibility and human experience of the natural environment are the horticultural emphasis of Wave Hill’s 28 acres of gardens, grounds, and woodlands.
Culinary and medicinal herbs from around the world reside in the Herb Garden with descriptive labels describing their useful qualities. In the Dry Garden, a selection of ornamental plants from drier climates are planted in artful combinations.
Surrounded by a rustic cedar fence, the Wave Hill Flower garden unfolds from month to month with inspired groupings of plants. As the season progresses, perennials, annuals, and tender plants billow into the pathways, blurring the formal lines of the beds.
