Bouquet of the Week: Stoop Season
As part of our recurring Bouquet of the Week series, Garden Collage continues to present a weekly inspirational bouquet that incorporates intriguing new elements into the traditional practice of flower arranging. This week, Garden Collage styles a “Stoop Bouquet” to honor the backyards and nuanced green spaces of New York City.

Growing up in a small New England town, the longer days of spring were always spent in the backyard. My father was into landscaping and there was never a shortage of colorful flowers and carefully-manicured shrubbery around me. When I moved to Brooklyn in 2008, I was a little taken back by the lack of personal space. I missed having my own little plot of green to escape to, but as I started to adjust to my very different lifestyle in the big city, I learned how to appreciate an iconic Brooklyn staple: the stoop.
Dark and gloomy New York City winters always underscore my annual dose of cabin fever, so once April rolls around I try to be outside as much as humanly possible. On a particularly nice Sunday morning, I decided I wanted to celebrate the warm weather with some friends, flowers, and freshly-squeezed lemonade, but not having access to a yard requires one to get a bit crafty.
Determined to satisfy my need for some springtime fun, I swept the winter remnants off of my stoop and set a bouquet of brightly colored ranunculi, thistle, irises, and miniature roses right in the middle of it as though it were the centerpiece on a garden party table. I figured if I was going to join the rest of my stoop-dwelling Brooklynites, I may as well do it in style.
