For Lil’ Sprouts: What Are Self-Pollinating Plants?

In the spirit of Generational Gardening, we’re highlighting our favorite self-pollinating plants. But what exactly are self pollinating plants?

Self-pollinating plants are defined by the pollen being shed and moving from the anther (the tip) to the stigma (in the center of filaments and anthers) of the same flower. These plants usually have smaller flowers (as they don’t need to attract pollinators) and are less resistant to disease (because there is less genetic mixing). Self-pollinating plants are ideal for indoor gardens, as they don’t need wind or contact with pollinators to survive. Plant some in a vegetable box, sit back, and let the plants do the rest!
