What is Turmeric “Golden Milk”?
How to make turmeric golden milk– it’s one of life’s essential questions!
Turmeric “Golden Milk” is a surprisingly tasty health tonic that has existed as a culinary staple in the East for centuries. Ideally touted as an immunity-boosting, anti-inflammatory digestion aid, it consists typically of turmeric cooked in milk, cinnamon, and honey.
Turmeric, a known superfood whose applications are seemingly limitless, is rich in the antioxidant curcumin, which helps neutralize free-radicals and stimulate the body’s antioxidant healing mechanisms, which in turn helps the body repair itself.
Turmeric tea, which is a folk remedy now gaining traction in the herbal wellness movement, is an easy, delicious way to consume the spice in its most bioactive form.
“Try adding a dash of black pepper and cardamom, which gives the mixture an earthy, chai-like spice. Black pepper is also said to enhance turmeric’s medicinal value by increasing its bioavailability.”
Golden milk is a formula believed to have originated in South India and the Middle East, where turmeric has long been used as a medicinal herb.
Cooking turmeric in coconut milk both activates the curcuminoid oil in the powder whilst improving turmeric’s “rusty” flavor; adding honey, as one does when making golden milk, also helps cut the bite. (For a nutritional boost, try adding a dash of black pepper and cardamom, which together give the mixture an earthy, chai-like spice.
Black pepper is also said to enhance turmeric’s medicinal value by increasing its bioavailability.)
Inspired by the movement towards making golden milk a staple in the West (we love the turmeric milk at the Abracadabra Turkish Bakery in Brooklyn, and we’ve been seeing it pop up on several juice bar menus around NYC recently), we decided to try The Chalkboard Mag‘s recipe for the elixir– and we’re happy to report that it’s just as good as the classic we get from expert baristas.
Below, we’ve reprinted their recipe with some slight adjustments, but feel free to play around with the ratios until you arrive at a formulation you like. As long as the final version of the elixir contains turmeric, you can’t go wrong. Drink up and enjoy!
