Toba Khedoori Opens September 25 at LACMA
Beginning September 25, 2016, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) will be opening a major museum survey of renowned mixed-media artist Toba Khedoori‘s work spanning the last two decades– an ouevre that highlights Khedoori’s impressive artistic evolution over the past 22 years.
Khedoori, who has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 1990, is known for her highly-detailed perspectival paintings, which often depict naturalistic elements and architecture– common and seemingly familiar territories– that the artist works to decontextualize. Executed on wax-coated paper with beautifully saturated colors, her large-scale works on paper (and her more recent oil-on-canvas paintings) mediate the relationship between form and function, geometry and negative space, and patterns that occur both within nature and in spite of it.

The results, both mysterious and surreal, invite the viewer to explore their own perspectives on the spaces humans occupy and the simple, beautiful patterns found in the surrounding environment– particularly with respect to the artist’s most recent work, Untitled (leaves/branches) (2015), in which Khedoori depicts branches and leaves with photorealistic precision.

“Toba Khedoori elevates the experience of the commonplace by treating ordinary objects and bits and pieces of nature as if they were precious baubles,” writes Franklin Sirmans, Director of the Perez Art Museum Miami, who curated the exhibition along with LACMA’s Christine Y. Kim. “Her attention to detail, her surrealist wit, and her appreciation for the magic of everyday remind us to take stock in what surrounds us.”
