Apple picking is a staple Fall tradition. But what should you do with all the apples you bring home?
GC Graphic Designer Eidia Moni Amin makes an exquisite Apple Tart that plays on our favorite flavors of Fall. Her recipe, involving crisp gala apples, buttery graham cracker crust, and the autumnal trifecta of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamon make for a delicious twist on a classic pastry. Eidia’s signature “apple roses” make this farm-fresh tart positively irresistible: simply curl a gently-cooked apple slice into a small “O” at the center of the tart, then surround it with “petals” by curving subsequent apple slices into “C”-shapes. “Once you accomplish one rose, you’ll be able to make multiple roses with ease!”, she quips. To savor the season for weeks to come, we made an easy apple relish. While the notion of marrying sweet apples and the pickle-like flavor of relish might seem off-putting, apple relish gives staple savory dishes a delicious, complex Fall twist. For meat lovers, try piling relish on to your favorite bratwurst; vegetarians can opt for a grilled sandwich of apple relish, butter, and sharp cheddar– just be sure to use a tart variety of apple, like granny smith. When the weather starts to cool, there’s nothing more comforting than a bowl of apple-pear soup. Our recipe incorporates all standard Fall flavors like cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and (of course!) our favorite, sage. Don’t let anything go to waste! Use your leftover apple skins from cooking to make a Fall Simmer Pot. In a saucepan, bring water to a boil and add apple skins, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, orange rinds, and nutmeg. (Alternatively, you can add a tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice to achieve a similar effect.) Return to a boil and then turn the heat down to low. Replenish water as needed. Encourage Lil’ Sprouts to explore what scents they think work well together!
