Plan a Perfect Floral Photo Op in Philly

Located in the Northern area of the city, Wyck House boasts the oldest rose garden in original plan America, and in the Spring the space is overrun with roses, which makes for a delightfully-fragrant and visually-dazzling experience. (Peak times of year are May and June.)
Unlike a traditional rose garden– where roses tend to be confined to their quadrants– the roses of Wyck House grow in great masses, trailing up terraces and winding across walls, for a petaled spectacle that looks as though it was transported out of an idyllic corner of the English countryside.
With benches tucked in between trailing branches, the gardens have a pervasive sense of backyard discovery, a quiet sanctuary on a busy street.
Adding to the slightly wild atmosphere are Wyck House’s “mystery roses”: a collection of roses which were thought to be lost to time before being found growing in Wyck House’s gardens.
In honor of their chosen flower, once a year in late May Wyck House hosts a “Celebration of the Roses“, where you can sip freshly-brewed rose tea and pick up rose cuttings for your own garden.
Though roses are their big draw, Wyck House is also home to a small urban farm, complete with beehives and a flock of hens, and hosts farmers markets during Summer and Fall where you can pick up fresh produce.
If you’re not in time for the market, however, two vegan cafés flank Wyck House– All The Way Live, specializing in raw vegan food, to one side, and The Nile Café, a soul food spot, to the other– in case you want to grab a bite to eat. Should you want to make an afternoon of it (or want some alternate backgrounds), swing through Philly’s downtown pocket gardens.
