Plant-Based Cleansing Products Are More Popular Than Ever
All-natural beauty products are all the rage these days, from super nourishing and ethically-made cleansers to miracle serums that do double duty to protect the environment (like our favorite natural skincare discovery, cacay oil). Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database receives millions of hits each year from health-conscious skin junkies looking to find out what products are better for them and the environment, and recent surveys into the efficacy of plant-based alternatives to other pharmaceuticals (like antibiotics) prove that nature holds the secret to many of our greatest skincare and health concerns– regardless of whether or not we choose to embrace it.
As the US and UK move to phase out microbeads in cosmetics products, a lot of attention is being given to discovering better alternatives – and often, plant-based alternatives like walnut shells and sugar scrubs reign supreme. Daisy Helman, Founder and CEO at Garden Collage recently shared her insight in Cosmetics Business magazine:
“The benefits of using natural ingredients in scrubs are manifold,” she wrote, commenting on conclusions that scientists and aestheticians have already made. “Plant-based scrubs also have a lower carbon footprint than those containing microbeads since less energy is expended in the production of, say, an oat seed than in the manufacture of a tiny granule of plastic. The ingredients found in plant-based scrubs also often biodegrade over time. In an industry rife with quick-fixes and the enduring promise of a cure-all, consumers are advised to seek out personal care products whose efficacy harnesses the power of nature rather than leaving it in disrepair.” It’s a message we can all get behind as we celebrate the healing qualities of plants, from the garden to the medicine cabinet.
