Make These Cool Floral Lanterns For Light During The Winter Solstice

The Swedish celebration of the Winter Solstice, also known as St. Lucia Day, takes place every year on December 13.

As the darkest day of the year (at least in the Northern hemisphere), the winter solstice has long been a time to celebrate light. Last year, we made traditional Waldorf lanterns and this year, we’re using pressed flowers to create beautiful lanterns to hang in windows (or outdoors, if you’re lucky enough to live in one of those few places that’s still warm). For our custom pressed-flower lanterns, we used paper lanterns left over from our Botany Salon, but any simple paper lantern will do.

The process for making pressed flower lanterns is very simple, so encourage Lil’ Sprouts to get adventurous with how they decorate. It’s a perfect indoor activity when the dark of winter rages outside– Plus, you can take the lanterns outside for a botanical element of décor when the weather is better.

  • Using an herb press (we like Arminho but you can also put your herbs between 2 pieces of waxed paper and iron them), press any of your favorite or seasonal flowers or foliage onto the lantern and leave for 24 hours.

  • Let dry for at least two hours.
  • Hang in a window to keep the dark at bay!
