Watch Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda Freestyle With Obama in The Rose Garden
Hamilton breakout star Lin-Manuel Miranda has had no shortage of popular cameos these days. Following his recent high-profile appearance on Saturday Night Live, we unearthed one of our favorite garden-related moments in his rise to fame: the time that Miranda freestyled with President Obama in the White House Rose Garden (which came only weeks before he won an epic rap battle on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon).
Today, the Rose Garden plays host to some of the White House’s finest and most prestigious events– including, most recently, a visit from the president’s favorite Broadway emcee.
The White House Rose Garden was designed under President Kennedy by Rachel Lambert Mellon, who completed this extended feature of the White House Garden in 1963. At Kennedy’s request, Mellon redesigned the Rose Garden to include a variety of plants, not just roses, but tulips, crabapples, and many other Appalachian varietals after having read Jefferson’s garden notes (he wanted the new garden to reflect Jefferson’s choices). Today, the Rose Garden plays host to some of the White House’s finest and most prestigious events– including, most recently, a visit from the president’s favorite Broadway emcee.
