Bouquet of the Week: Celebrating The Magic of Fall

As part of our recurring Bouquet of the Week series, Garden Collage continues to present a weekly inspirational bouquet that incorporates intriguing new elements into the traditional practice of floral design. This week, Garden Collage stylist Chelsea Dowling arranges a bouquet to celebrate the magic of Fall.

It’s official: Today was the first day that the temperature in New York City did not surpass 75 and went as low as 60 degrees! I don’t care what you say, its officially Sweater Weather, and you can bet that I put on a turtleneck this morning and skipped down the street. Fall is my favorite season (as it is for most New York City dwellers). In my mind, this is the time of year when all the magic happens. The colors start to change, the atmosphere turns cozy and romantic, you can go apple picking, pumpkin picking, take trips up state, go on longer walks through central park… the list of Fall activities is endless. Not to mention that Halloween is coming up– one of my favorite holidays. In honor of my favorite season, I decided to create a bouquet that plays with the colors that we can expect to come out in the next few weeks!

The first flower I knew I had to use was this maroon and magenta colored Dahlia. Known as the ‘Black Dahlia’, it has a very creepy lore attached it, which makes it only suitable for a distinctly Fall bouquet. (Black Dahlia was apparently the name of a very powerful and evil witch in the Middle Ages, so it’s perfect for spooky season coming up.) The next flower I chose was the Black Calla lily, which is truly dark and brooding but incredibly striking and elegant at the same time. After pairing the darker tones I also selected an orange calla lily– the color of Fall leaves. I added in some pink astilbe for those amazing pink fall sunsets that seem to set the mood for the season. I then topped off my bouquet with golden Limonium and Dusty Miller, hybrid fillers that beautifully tie all my Fall colors together.

Something about the colors of Fall seems to set the mood for season, as if being surrounded by beauty encourages us to channel it from within. As the days start to get darker and a little chillier, I encourage you to get outside and enjoy these amazing Fall colors and all the activities this season has to offer!
