NYC Living Hacks, From Essential Oil Showers to Mineralizing Water
Stuff We’re Digging is a Garden Collage Magazine feature where a member of our staff spotlights a collection of intriguing new products from the world of plants, wellness, mindfulness, and/or beauty. Some of these items can be found in the GC Shop, while others are simply beautiful discoveries worth coveting. This week, GC Stylist Chelsea Dowling spotlights products for a girlfriends’ guide to relaxing in the city. Shop the story, below.
I love living in New York, I really truly do– and after moving quite literally 20 times in my life, that’s saying something. Love notwithstanding, that doesn’t mean that NYC hasn’t kicked me to the curb a few times. New York always has a way of helping you get back up, but for those down times when you just need help getting through the week these are some items that just make you feel good (along with a glass or two of wine with your best friends).
“I suggest putting a few drops of your favorite essential oil on the shower floor and just letting the scent wash over you. Then don your robe, keep your hair in the towel, and grab Origins’ Active Charcoal Mask.”
A relaxing shower is a good place to start. I suggest putting a few drops of your favorite essential oil on the shower floor and just letting the scent wash over you. Then don your robe, keep your hair in the towel, and grab Origins’ Active Charcoal Mask. After you are rejuvenated from your amazing shower and mask combo, put on some PJs and take care of at least one chore. I normally do laundry, because who doesn’t love that clean, warm clothing?! My favorite green (and fantastic smelling) detergent is by The Laundress in collaboration with Le Labo. The rose-scented formula is not only luxurious but gets the job done at a good price and no negative impact on the environment.
When it comes to prepping for bed, I am a person who takes off all her jewelry every night and puts it in the same place. Right by my bed is my copper rush woven basket by GAA– a beautiful, handwoven basket that is so pretty and lovely it just adds to a feeling of calm at home.
Once a week I allow for some serious gluttony– meaning I eat cheese, fruit, and wine for dinner. To make this experience extra beautiful I use a white granite cheese board with brass accents on it. You then need to set up on the couch with your 5th Ave Glacier Park Pendelton Blanket (#9) and get that Netflix going!
Normally, when I am feeling a bit out of sorts, I like to throw on some thing that has a strong female lead, which helps me get into a better mindset for the coming week. (My go-to’s are “Gilmore Girls” and “Parks and Rec”, though if you’re more of a reader, I’d recommend A Wilder Life by Celestine Maddy and Abbye Churchill– an amazingly inspiring take on how to have meaningful interactions with nature in the Big City.) After a glorious dinner and some serious Netflix lovin’, it’s time for bed, at which point I always grab a glass of water in a copper cup (#10) because copper is shown to mineralize water to give it added nutritional benefits.
I try wake up slowly and keep my morning make-up ritual short and sweet– My current favorite scents are Gypsy Water by Byredo and Beach Walk by Mason Margela, which makes me feel like a beachy-gypsy-goddess. I am currently also loving the all green RMS eye polish, which gives you that dewy, fresh-faced eye shadow look that I am so in love with right now. After the beauty regime is over, wear your favorite outfit– one that makes you feel comfortable and attractive at the same time. Then hit the pavement and take your life back! We all have had weeks where life is just a bit harder than it could be, but if you can make the time to take care of your self, you’ll only come back stronger.
