Events We Love: The Oakland Plant Exchange
What began ten years ago as a way for neighbors to get to know each other has since grown into a twice a year tradition, attracting hundreds of people and facilitating the free exchange of some 2,500 plants.
Taking place on Saturday, October 21st, 2017 from noon to 4 PM in Oakland, CA, just downhill from The Mormon Temple (at 4500 Lincoln Blvd.), The Plant Exchange invites gardeners to bring in their plants and take away any plants that might interest them. The exchange doesn’t have to be a 1-to-1 or equal value trade; those attending are held only to the honor standard (meaning, as much as you might be obsessed with something you see, only take what you truly need, and leave enough for others). Those who do not have plants to donate but would still like to participate are invited to purchase plants at a local nursery to bring, or else donate or volunteer. For anyone looking to try out some new gardening tools, a gardening tool exchange also takes place alongside the larger plant exchange.
On hand at the event are master gardeners, ready to answer questions about your new acquisitions; while food trucks and live music complete the community oriented atmosphere. No tickets needed! Just show up ready to give and receive.
