Make This Beetroot Rinse To Enhance Dark Hair Glow

If you happen to have dark hair, making a DIY beetroot rinse is something of a right of passage in the realm of natural beauty. Not only does beetroot enhance the glow and resilience of dark-pigmented hair follicles, they also encourage lift and add nourishment to long, unruly tresses. Apple cider vinegar, which detoxifies the scalp and inhibits bacterial growth, is an optional addition to this recipe as some beauty die-hards claim that despite its benefits, the smell lingers. If that’s the case (and you don’t prefer the smell) simply make the rinse without it. The final key ingredient in the rinse, coffee, adds additional shine and softness while encouraging the repair of stressed, damaged hair. (Coffee, especially when used topically as a scrub, is also great for tightening skin and smoothing its dimples.)

Beet Root Rinse Recipe

Beetroot rinse should only be used on brown- and black-hair, as the deep-red dye can leave temporary color that most people aim to retain as long as they can. Beets are high in an antioxidant called betalain, which fights free radicals and the kind of premature aging that can leave strands looking dull and lackluster. Try this DIY rinse as a way to beef up the vibrance without chemicals, and you’ll reap the benefits of both color and shine.

Glow-Enhancing Beetroot Rinse

1 hour
Ingredients
  • 4 cups filtered water
  • 3 Tbsp dried sage
  • 3 Tbsp dried rosemary
  • 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar (optional)
  • 1 large beet
  • 3 Tbsp coffee
Preparation
1.

Peel and quarter the beetroot and place into a saucepan with the rest of the ingredients. Let simmer for thirty minutes.

2.

Strain the mixture into a bowl and then massage the mixture into your hair. Cover with a shower cap and then get a warm, wet towel and put it over the top of your cap. Let sit for 30 minutes.

3.

Rinse mixture off in the shower and shampoo and condition hair as normal. Be advised that both beetroot and coffee can stain. Use a towel that you wouldn’t mind sacrificing in the name of beauty, and be sure to remove any excess particulate matter from your tub in order to avoid having to unclog your drain later.
